WOODLAND - Two Woodland women almost singlehandedly are carrying on a more than century-old tradition of farming in their family.

Miss Florence Parrott and Miss Stella Parrott operate their 110-acre farm at the north end of the village all alone, with only an occassional lift from their brother, George Parrott, who lives nearby, or once in a while the aid of a part-time hired hand.

One of Pioneer Farms
Theirs is one of the pioneer farms of the community, having been a grant to their grandfather, Jonathan Haight, from the U.S. government in 1837. Still living in the house in which their mother was born, the two sisters can well remember the burned ruins of the old sawmill which many years ago occupied the area north of their present barn and at the rear of the Richard Estep home.

The Parrott home of today is modernized and landscaped until it is probably one of the most pleasing homesteads in the village. Evergreen plantings partly screen it from the road. On the north it is flanked by a neat barn and farm buildings.

Florence and Stella Parrott have been running the farm since the death of their father in 1934. It isn't a hobby, it's their career- hard work from morning until night. They arise early, about 5 a.m., and Florence, 67, the elder, does the heavy outdoor work, milking cows, feeding calves, driving the tractor and putting in the crops. She just finished putting in 26 acres of winder wheat.

Farm Work Divided
Stella, 61, does the inside work and gardens on a big scale. As a hobby this year she has been growing large and unusual pansies. In another year she may have plants for sale. She was an army reserve nurse during the First World war, spending seven months overseas, most of the time near Chaumon, France.

Although the sisters may go south this year, as they usually do, spring will find them back ready to resume their farming.

At the age of 18 years she became a teacher in the public schools and taught eight years. She was converted in her youth and joined the Alto Baptist church. She was married to Floyd Parrot on April 16, 1895. To this union were born four children, Lucy E., Seymour R., Florence M., and Stanley F.

She leaves to mourn their loss her husband, one daughter, Mrs. Lucy Wingeier, one son, Stanley Parrott, two grandchilren, two sisters, Mrs. Frances Houghton and Mrs. Clyde Graham and a host of relatives and friends.

She was a loving wife and mother and true friend. Funeral services were held at the home of her daughter. Rev. Lohnes, officiated. Interment at Merriman cemetery.

His Marriage Was Set To Occur Today

Stanley Parrott, 21, of near Alto was killed and Clair Brown of Lowell was injured Wednesday afternoon about 2:30 o'clock on US-16 at the South Boston Grange Hall corner, when a car driven by Ira J. O'Donnell of Grand Rapids apparently crashed into the path of the Parrott car as he was about to turn in to the Ray Lewis gas station.

According to reports, the Parrott car, which was traveling east on US-16 tried to avoid the O'Donnell car, which was traveling west. The impact of the crash sent the O'Donnell car careening across to the north side of the road and the Parrott car was left on the south side of the road turned up on its top and headed west.

O'Donnell was scratched on the chin and Clair Brown was badly cut about the head and taken to St. Mary's hospital, Grand Rapids, for treatment but brought back to Lowell afterwards.

Mrs. Ray Lewis, wife of the proprietor of the Silver Barn, witnessed the accidient. She called Mr. Lewis who removed Parrott and Brown from the wreckage. Mr. Parrott died a few minutes later.

Stanley Parrott planned to be married today to Miss Henrietta J. Warmels of Grand Rapids. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Lucy Wingeier who lives near Alto.

Sheriff Herbert Ross of Ionia county, investigated the accident and an inquest will be held probably this (Thursday) morning.

Funeral services for Stanley Parrott will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at Roth's Chapel with interment in Merriman cemetery, South Lowell.

Notes: Roger ``Gene'' Parrott, Sr., of Manchester, husband of Victoria (Siwik) Parrott died Thursday, (April 18, 2002) at Manchester Memorial Hospital. Roger was the son of the late George and Edna (Kahllo) Parrott, he was born in Woodland, MI on May 18, 1916 in the home built by his great grandfather, Jonathan Haight, who founded the town of Woodland, MI with a land grant from President Van Buren. With a lifelong interest in aviation, at the age of 16, Mr. Parrott acquired his first airplane. After high school, he started the Parrott Flying School in Kalamazoo, MI where he met his wife, Victoria. During the early years of World War II, Mr. Parrott taught flying to the Army Air Corps in Florida. During the latter part of the war, he flew as chief pilot for Consolidated Aircraft. In 1945, Mr. Parrott became the corporate pilot for the Fuller Brush Company, in Hartford, a position he served until the Fuller family sold the company in 1968. He then turned a hobby business, in the cleaning chemical supplies distribution industry, into a company known as RoVic, Inc. which employs 70 and serves Southern New England. Mr. Parrott served as the chairman of the board until his death. Mr. Parrott is a direct descendent of the first settlers of Connecticut and a descendent of four colonial governors. Besides his wife of 61 years, Mr. Parrott leaves a daughter, Tanya Reichelt of South Windsor; two sons, Roger of South Windsor and Michael of Manchester; three grandchildren, Mark Reichelt of Wayland, MA, Jon Reichelt of Manchester, and Elizabeth Parrott of Vernon; seven great grandchildren; and two nieces in Michigan. Notes: Tanya Ann (Parrott) Reichelt, 76, of South Windsor, formerly of Manchester, passed away on Sunday, August 26, 2018 after a four-month battle with cancer. She was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan on September 16, 1941, daughter of the late Roger E. Parrott Sr. and Victoria (Siwik) Parrott. Her family moved to Manchester in 1945.

Tanya graduated from Manchester High School in 1959 and attended Middlesex Hospital School of Nursing where she obtained her RN. She has resided in South Windsor for the past 20 years. Tanya loved life. She danced and later taught dancing which was her love while in school. She was active in the Girl Scouts and traveled with Troop 1 on their semi-annual trip to Europe. Tanya loved to travel and traveled to many areas of the world. She never finished all her travels she had on her bucket list. She loved to paint and her family always looked forward to a framed holiday gift every year. Tanya worked in her family's business, RoVic in Manchester and in her later years she was employed at Bank of America where she made many friends who continued to meet for their lunch outings even after retirement. Tanya was a talented seamstress and her family treasured her handmade gifts.

She leaves her two devoted sons, Mark and his wife, Kim, of Wayland, MA., and their two children; Ben and Anika, and Jon and his wife, Laura, of Manchester, and their four children: Ashley Gurzler and her husband Jacob, Zachary Reichelt and his wife Vanessa, Emily Carlson and her husband Corey and Matthew Reichelt, four great-grandchildren; Hunter, Griffin, Samuel and Grant, two brothers and sisters-in-law; Roger and Teri Parrott of South Windsor and Michael and Linda Parrott of Manchester and her niece Elizabeth Parrott and her son Jacob. Tanya leaves many friends and neighbors whom she felt were her extended family. Her family thanks them for their love and support throughout her Illness. She was blessed to have you in her life.

An I-94 construction worker was killed and another injured when the pickup truck they were riding in crashed into road building equipment on an unopened, unfinished section of freeway Friday night.

Killed was Clayton Parrott, 47, a painter for the Grand Rapids Building Maintenance Co. Injured was the driver of the truck, Robert Porter, 34. Both men are from Grand Rapids. New Buffalo State police said the light pickup truck slammed sideways into a 12-ton road roller and then crashed into a paving machine.

The accident as far as police can determine happened about 11 p.m. last night but the victims were not discovered until 7 a.m. when highway department workers were going to work. The accident took place about 150 feet southwest of where I-94 crosses Lakeside road. The stretch of expressway runs

Parrott, born Oct 10, 1915, lives at 1322 Grandville, Grand Rapids. His body was taken to Smith Funeral Home, New Buffalo. Death was instant, police said, propably from a crushed chest, skull fracture and broken neck. Information on Parrott was not available but he is reported to be survived by six children. FATAL CRASH WRECKAGE-
Clayton Parrott, 46, Grand Rapidss painter, died last night when pickup truck above struck construction equipment on unfinished section of I-94 near Union Pier. Driver, Robert Porter, 34, also a Grand Rapids painter, was thrown clear, suffered broken ankle and head injuries, was unable to summon helpt to accident which police said hapened (sic) at 11 p.m. Friday night. The wreckage was discovered by construction workers at 7 a.m. this morning. The truck didd an estimated $25,000 damage to the paving machine.

Arnold married Phyllis Arlene Gregg on 21 Sep 1957 in Los Angeles Co., California. Phyllis was born on 14 Oct 1939 in Roscoe, Lassen Co., California and died on 1 Mar 2010, at age 70.

Notes: Phyllis Parrott passed away Monday, March 1 after a short and sudden illness, surrounded by her husband and all of her children. Phyllis was born October 14, 1939 in Roscoe, California to Roy Alvin Gregg and Helen Cope Gregg. In 1957 she graduated from Whittier High School in Whittier, Ca. Later that same year on September 21, she married her beloved husband, Arnold Robert Parrott. Together they raised five children and welcomed sixteen grandchildren into their family. Caring for her family was the great love and work of her life and continued until the moment she passed.

In 1961 Phyllis and Arnold were baptized members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the family was sealed in the Oakland, Ca. temple the following year. She held many callings in the church, but most enjoyed her time as a Church Service Missionary serving as a guide to visitors at the observation deck of the Church Office Building in Salt Lake City. She was also a dedicated family historian.

Survived by her husband Arnold; Sons: Scott, Provo; Gregory, Atlanta Ga.; Brian, Buena Vista Va. Daughters: Carrie, Buena Vista Va.; Pamela, Provo. Brother Gerrell. Twelve granddaughters, four grandsons and beloved daughters and sons-in-law.

Funeral services will be held Saturday March 6th at 11:00 am at the LDS chapel at 3230 N. 555 E in Provo. Family will receive friends prior to the service at 10:00 am.
